Little Bits of a Little Bit's Life

Maybe they'd have to hold each other when it rose, all organe and full and close. Maybe that's where our romantic notions about the moon first came from. Two people holding each other to keep their hearts from breaking, because everybody they knew was dying in the cold rocks and dust piles a quarter million miles away...

It never ceases to amaze me that I can keep myself busy for 12 hours doing small chores that aren't schoolwork but need to get done. Stuff like Christmas shopping, resume writing, job searching, sewing, etc. can totally exhaust you when you do it all day long. But the best part of it is that it means that I get to write lots of lists! Yay! :)

One thing I've made lists about is the movies I want to see. CNN actually said that "The Aviator" is good, and the fact that it's about Hughes is pretty interesting. So I wouldn't mind seeing that. Also on the list is "Closer," since I've become a regular old romantic sap. My brother saw the play when the drama dept. produced it, and he said it was amazing. Then he saw the movie, and said it was nearly as good. (Caveat: My brother has the wierdest taste in movies though - he didn't like Shrek, for heaven's sake. So God only knows what "good" means to him.) Last movie on the list is one called "Beyond the Sea," which right now is only playing in NY and LA. Which is very disappointing since it's all about Bobby Darin. Apparently there is also dancing in the movie! So, I'd like to see that because when was the last time you saw a movie about swing dance? Sadly, don't know when it'll be anywhere near me.

I've also made a list of patterns I like for the deca costumes. If Deb would only get back to me, I would get started on making them. Here are the finalists for the top: B4132 and M4659. On the first one, I'd just use the sleeveless pattern in the top center. On the second one, if we're wearing the skirts separate from the tops, then I would make the top center as is (I really like the gathered straps :). If the skirts are going to be worn with the blouses, then I'll make it a straight hem instead of an assymmetric one. My skirt will look either like this, without the godet in the back, or like one of these. They'll probably have to be shortened, b/c most of these look way longer than our skirts are supposed to be.

The one shirt that I really love is this one, but no one that I've showed it to likes it. Among others, Mom pointed out that it would look silly without sleeves, and David C. thinks that it makes the bustline look saggy. I'm bummed; I just adore this look. Probably won't look that good on though, so I'm willing to let it go.

I've also made a Christmast list that keeps growing. Everyone in my family asked for a digital camera; everyone also wants a different type of digital camera. My brother lost his on the SF scavenger hunt, so I don't think he deserves one, especially since he has a camera phone now. I've got the hand-me-down camera that withstood a hurricane's water damage. Now, however, its age has caught up with it, and it no longer is very responsive to the pressing of the shutter button, the pictures are always out of focus, and it does horribly in low-light situations. I think that camera is going to get passed down to Dad or Mom, and one of them will get a new one. That's 4 brand new digital cameras under one roof.

I've been feeling more and more digusted with my consumerism this holiday. I don't think I'm spending any more than the past years. The thing is that I didn't shop ONCE this quarter - not a single time. And that means that necessary things like buying jeans to replace the two pair with holes, socks to replace the ten singletons, underwear to replace the worn out, shirts to replace the stained, etc. didn't get done. Which means that all of that is happening all at once - right now, and it's overwhelming when juxtaposed with the general present buying at Christmastime. Why do I feel a constant need to buy everything I like? It's like what happens to Americans in "Supersize Me" or Fast Food Nation: we just want MORE, we want everything we can get our hands on, regardless of whether we need it or not. And how can you tell whether you really need something? It is making me genuinely uncomfortable. But then I see something I like, and I forget all about that. What is going on here - in me, in America? I must ponder this further in the shower some day.

On a similar note, Fr. Carl has a book of religious volunteer opportunities which I am *very* excited about looking at when I return. As much as I would love a job at Google, deep inside I don't think I'm ready to settle down in one area , for one company, doing something that doesn't directly benefit other people. If Google had some outreach/philanthropy department that'd be awesome. But as far as I know, they don't. Plus, I don't know whether I could do that sort of work separate from my faith. So, I'm just watching and waiting with open eyes and ears and heart, seeing what comes my way.

Speaking of which, what about summer travel? C says she wants two weeks at end of June. Who else is in? I am in special need of those with special language talents in something other than English or Spanish :) Japanese, Chinese, Hindu, Arabic, and more non-Romance or non-Germanic languages may all apply; I would definitely consider partial or full compensation for services depending on skill and company provided. (I'm not kidding.) Start thinking about it now! And while you're at it, what's happening during spring break? Hawaii, anyone? :) :)

That's prolly long enough for now. Hope y'all are having a great holiday! Call or IM if you've got a free minute; I've been doing the same :) God bless til next time!
